What are billable hours?

Billable hours are the time you spend on work you can invoice a client for directly — the design, the code, the writing, the calls that are part of a paid engagement. They're the hours that translate into revenue.

Billable vs non-billable time

Non-billable time still matters to your business — proposals, invoicing, admin, learning, marketing — but it doesn't produce direct revenue. Tracking both side by side is the only way to see your real billable utilization, rather than guessing at it.

How to calculate billable utilization

Billable utilization is your billable hours divided by your total working hours, shown as a percentage. Log a representative week or two of entries here to get a real number for your own work, rather than the industry-average estimate used in the hourly rate calculator's defaults.

Frequently asked questions

If your end time is earlier than your start time, the calculator treats the session as crossing midnight. For example, 22:00 to 02:00 is counted as 4 hours, not a negative duration.
